2007: It has not been a happy start to 2007 for Hay who missed Waitakere's 1-0 victory over Fijian champiosn Ba in the inaugural O-League final before he captained New Zealand in their 4-0 and 5-0 losses to Costa Rica and Venezuela respectively. Remained at home for the tour of Wales for the birth of his first child.

2006: Danny Hay came out of self-imposed retirement when Ricki Herbert took charge of the All Whites in mid 2005 to skipper the All Whites in their gritty 1-0 loss to Australia in London. Played all but one of the All Whites 11 matches in 2006 with injury forcing him out of the 1-1 draw against English premier leaguers Charlton Athletic. Holds the distinction of captaining New Zealand to their first international win on European soil in May 2006 when a Vaughan Coveny doubled guided the All Whites to a 3-1 win over Georgia in Atlenkirchen, Germany.
