Trophy tour continues in Auckland

Since last month’s newsletter, the trophy has toured each of the host cities and ended up in Auckland where it is currently making visits to a wide range of schools, clubs and other organisations.

The trophy tour started out at Kelston Girls’ High School where students were excited to be the first Auckland school to see the silverware. Maia Jackman – New Zealand international footballer and Auckland Venue staff member – spoke to the assembly about the event.

Maia also presented in front of 2,500 students at Mount Albert Grammar and showed a DVD which generated a lot of trophyinterest. The girls’ football teams at the school took the chance to have a photo with the trophy and talk with Maia about the upcoming event.

The third school visited was Epsom Girls’ Grammar School – one of the biggest girls’ schools in the country and Maia’s former school. Three Young Football Ferns also attend Epsom so there was real excitement among the students during the trophy presentation.

Other school visits included Summerland Primary in Henderson and St Mary’s College in the centre of Auckland. Thank you to Maia Jackman for speaking at these various schools. Because of Maia’s involvement with the New Zealand team and her football experience, she received a lot attention and was highly respected by all students and staff.

The trophy has also toured various clubs throughout Auckland including Bay Olympic, Fencibles and Three Kings United where youngsters involved in a 7th and 8th grade tournament took the opportunity to get a photo.

Apart from schools and clubs, the trophy also visited the Regional Sports Trust, Massey University Sports Symposium, an Auckland referees meeting and a United Soccer 1 coaching workshop.

Another highlight on the tour was the Coca-Cola Careers Expo which was attended by around 17,000 people. As well as having the trophy on display, there were also magazines, stickers, posters, books and CD’s which were all handed out during the three-day event.

The trophy tour was a resounding success, helping to create awareness of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup. A special thank you to Wade Chang, Auckland Venue Marketing Assistant, for organising a sensational tour and making sure the trophy was well looked after!
