Planning has cranked up an extra gear in Wellington with Nigeria confirmed as the final team to grace the “Ring of Fire”, as Wellington Stadium is affectionately referred to by local fans. The Nigerian Flamingoes finished top of the African qualifiers and Wellington crowds are bound to be enthralled by their skill and power on the field.With the much-anticipated ‘classico’ between Brazil and England on Thursday 30 October and the Young Football Ferns taking on South American champions Colombia on Tuesday 4 November, the capital has arguably the pick of the pool matches. Excitement is growing in Wellington with lots of interest from school groups who are taking advantage of a special school promotion on offer from the Local Organising Committee. The football fields are buzzing with anticipation and Wellington Venue Organising Committee staff are out in force spreading the word. Our unseasonably wet winter has put a dampener on the local club season this year but spring is looking much brighter. Wellington will host its first-ever Masters Football Tournament on 13-14 September and the women’s section has a generous lower-age limit of 28. There was an epic shootout, which Melbourne Victory won 8-7, required to separate the two teams after a 0-0 stalemate for the bumper midweek crowd of 9200.
