Shirley Primary School in Christchurch has staked its claim on the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup by becoming the first school in New Zealand to sign up for the school promotion. The special offer, organised by the Local Organising Committee, includes an entry price to the opening game of just $5 for students while teachers and supervisors can enter for free! An educational resource kit will also be provided for teachers to use in term four. This will include a module relating to learning about countries of teams playing in Christchurch plus wall charts and an 'Adopt a Team' initiative. Shirley Primary School Principal Sylvia Fidow says attending the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup is a great opportunity for kids to realise how successful they can be in sport. "It’s good for the kids to watch young female role models who they can aspire to be like when they grow up. All of them will be able to see that nowadays you can make a career out of sport," she says. "In addition it will be a chance to see athletes representing countries from all over the world. We have a very multi-ethnic school and it’s important for our students to learn about different cultures." Sylvia estimates that around 100 children from the school will attend the opening game in Christchurch on Wednesday 29 October at midday. She hopes that other schools will get onboard and will encourage others to do so through the principals association. Sylvia is a keen footballer herself and hopes to see the profile of the women's game continue to grow. “I’m from a family of footballers and I still play socially. My seven-year-old daughter has her first game of the season tomorrow and I hope she will be playing for the New Zealand U-17 side one day!”
