Made the squad for the Confederations Cup and played against Botswana in a pre-tournament friendly in Gabarone. Released by Seattle in July, a week after undergoing surgery on a torn hamstring. His MLS rights remained with Seattle and Smith would stay with the club to rehabilitate.

2008: Made his MLS debut for Toronto against David Beckham's LA Galaxy and scored in the 3-2 win. Made the starting line-up for both games against New Caledonia. Drafted by expansion MLS franchise Seattle Sounders in an special expansion draft ahead of teh 2009 season.

2007: Drafted by Toronto FC as teh first pick in the 2007 Supplemental Draft, but did not immediately join the club. Smith came on as a 59th minute substitute in the 5-0 loss to Venezuela in March but injury forced his late scratching for the match against Wales in late May. Began the 2007-08 NZFC season with Hawke's Bay United on loan. Used off the bench in all three World Cup qualifiers in 2007.

2006: A decorated football graduate of West Virginia University in the US, Smith is doing his best to break free from the large sporting shadow cast by his famous test wicketkeeper father Ian. A pacy, strong front-runner, Smith made his debut against Malaysia in February 2006.
